What is the TMJ?

The Temporomandibular Joint is located directly in front of the ear on both sides of the head, where both the upper and lower jaw meet.  This joint is used every day while talking, chewing, biting, or yawning.

What causes TMJ Disorder?

Although there is an estimated 10 million people that have TMJ disorder, most people are unaware of it.  TMJ disorder happens when the cartilage lining of the TMJ is worn away.  The lining may be worn away from teeth clenching/grinding or by having a misaligned bite.

What are the symptoms?

Up to 80% of people with TMJ disorder experience frequent headaches, especailly after first waking up.  Symptoms also include pain while opening/closing the mouth or right below the ear.

Dentists are now able to make a small appliance that is designed to take the pressure off these specific joints.  The nightguard is worn during sleep, very comfortable, and made to fit the contours of your mouth.
